Reason for the Explosion:
The main reason for the massive blast is caused by 2750 tonnes of Ammonium nitrate, which has been stored at a local warehouse for the past six years "without any preventive measure" nearby the port. Authorities are still not clear on what exactly caused this incident, but there could be a fire accident near the storage area, which could have resulted in this massive explosion.
Casualties and Damages by the Explosion:
At least 100 were killed, and more than 5000 would have wounded the aftermath of the explosion. There are no official numbers in the count, and the death toll was expected to rise. At least 300,000 people were unable to sleep in their homes, which is unfit to live for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, a nearby government hospital that treated the COVID-19 pandemic has been destroyed by this explosion, which resulted in a lack of hospitality issues to treat the injured victims. The explosion of the city flipped the cars upside down, shattering glass, and crumbled all the buildings present nearby, which resulted in almost three to five billion worth of property damage.
The blast was such powerful that it was even felt in Cyprus - a nearby island country, which is around 240 kilometers away and registered as a 3.3 magnitude earthquake in the Richter scale. A crater was created by the explosion roughly around 405 feet in diameter, which is more than the size of a football ground.
What is Ammonium Nitrate?
Ammonium nitrate (AN), a compound of ammonium and nitrogen, is a white, salt-like solid mostly used as a fertilizer which is not flammable in its pure form, but when heated releases an enormous amount of gas and heat. In this case, when Ammonium nitrate is mixed with any containment, even in small traces, the mixture becomes much more prone to detonation.
On April 17, 2013, an ammonium nitrate explosion occurred at the West Fertilizer Company storage in Texas. Fifteen people were killed, more than 160 were injured, and more than 150 buildings were damaged or destroyed.
